Note: This article appeared in various newspapers and magazines.  We’re in the season of Mother’s and Father’s Days and I wanted to share it again.  This story is dedicated to parents. I don’t remember my parents pursuing fun.  They worked too hard.  Nor did they understand the concept of a bucket list.  The buckets we […]

Video – Grand Canyon Rafting – Bucket List Trip
January 13, 2015

In June 2011, after a patient 17 year wait on the National Park Service's permit "waiting list," I was awarded a permit to lead my own Grand Canyon rafting trip.  I kayaked the run in 1993 but was injured halfway.  I dislocated my shoulder at Mile 104, Ruby Rapid, and finished the trip on a friend's raft.  In 1994 I submitted my initial permit application to the National Park Service. I've shared photos and stories from my 2011 trip in various articles which appeared in newspapers and in American Whitewater Magazine.  Check out the link below to a 13 minute video which was produced by one of my fellow boatmen, JoHn R. Gibson, a skilled rafter and talented videographer.

It’s amazing what I don’t hear when I listen.  I hadn’t thought much about our lunch topic and lamented more about the inevitable issues of dating or puberty.  I rehearsed those conversations alone in the garage.  One day they’ll call me from the bullpen for fatherly insight.

(Chico Enterprise-Record & Growing Up Chico Magazine) It was the perfect project. The challenge required imagination and met my testosterone fix.  The task: rebuilding a 30-year-old trailer.   We considered new trailers with microwaves and satellite dishes but they resembled tract homes on wheels.  We desired simplicity.  We hunted for just the right one and found […]

(Chico Enterprise-Record, September 2012) ‘Bucket list’ wasn’t in my parents’ vocabulary when I was a kid.  The buckets we used carried paint. My folks live in Colorado. We typically see each other three times a year. We often speak via phone but it’s during visits I notice their mortality. They tire easily and discuss ailments. They’ve […]
